Ami, Japan – Two men, a Brazilian and a Peruvian, were arrested in the act after stealing jewelry from a secondhand store in Ami City, Ibaraki Prefecture, on Thursday night (30). The incident ended with employees injured after a violent escape attempt.
According to Ibaraki Shimbun, the Brazilian suspect is 23 years old and lives in Oyama City, Tochigi Prefecture. His occupation was not disclosed. The Peruvian suspect is also 23 years old, and his residence and occupation have not been released. Authorities have not revealed the identities of either suspect.
How the theft and assault occurred
Police said the incident took place around 9 p.m. at Book Off Bazaar Arakawaoki in Ami. The two suspects broke a display case and stole 12 items, including necklaces, valued at approximately 5.41 million yen.
The activity was noticed by two employees who caught the suspects inside the store. When the suspects attempted to flee, they assaulted the staff using an object resembling a stick.
The employees suffered injuries to their arms, legs, and face, but their lives are not in danger. Despite being injured, they managed to restrain the suspects until police arrived, after being called by another employee.
Police arrested both men, who remain in custody. Authorities are still investigating the case and have not confirmed whether the suspects have confessed.
