Young Indonesian Detained in Shizuoka for Illegal Overstay in the Country

Routine Stop for Broken Light Leads to Arrest for Expired Visa in Kikugawa

Young Indonesian Detained in Shizuoka for Illegal Overstay in the Country

A 21-year-old Indonesian citizen was detained by authorities in Kikugawa City, Shizuoka Prefecture, on charges of violating Japan's Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act. The young man, who claimed to have no fixed address or employment, was caught in an overstay situation (illegal remaining after visa expiration).

According to the police report, the man's visa had expired on May 10. Since he remained on Japanese soil until the 22nd of the same month, an irregularity of approximately two weeks was established.

Traffic Stop at Convenience Store Revealed the Infraction

What was supposed to be a routine traffic check ended up revealing the suspect's illegal immigration status.

The police action took place on the night of the 23rd, around 9:30 PM. Officers decided to approach the young man in the parking lot of a local convenience store after noticing a technical fault in the car he was driving: the light illuminating the rear license plate was out.

During a standard check of identification documents, officers discovered the driver's illegal status. When questioned, the man cooperated with authorities and immediately confessed to the offense, stating verbatim: "There is no mistake about my overstay."

Shizuoka police are now conducting a more detailed investigation to map the young man's trajectory in Japan, seeking to understand the reasons for his arrival in the country and his activities before his visa expired.
